Town Authorizes Sale Of Historic North Fire Station For $2 Million

Key Points

  • Sale of 230 North Street authorized by 2/3 majority
  • Estimated $2 million in proceeds to go to Capital Stabilization Fund
  • Proponents argued the sale generates revenue and ensures building restoration

Hingham voters authorized the Select Board to sell the old North Fire Station at 230 North Street under Article 21. The proposal is part of a strategy to generate non-tax revenue for the town's Capital Stabilization Fund, with the property expected to bring in approximately $2 million.

While some residents, like Jen Hagerty, expressed concern about losing historic buildings, Select Board member Liz Klein emphasized the board’s commitment to generating revenue to offset tax increases. It is time for the town to release this building, Klein said. Supporters pointed to the successful restoration of other town-sold properties, such as the Hersey House, as a model for the station's future. The article achieved the required two-thirds majority in a 341-84 standing vote.

Motion: To authorize the sale of 230 North Street.
