Residents Block Sale Of 8 Short Street To Protect Local 'Makers Barn' Proposal
Key Points
- Sale of 8 Short Street defeated after failing to reach 2/3 majority
- Voters favored preserving the building for community use or a "Makers Barn"
- Standing vote was 226 in favor to 210 opposed
A proposal to sell the historic town-owned building at 8 Short Street failed to gain the necessary two-thirds support under Article 22, following an emotional plea from the building's long-term tenant. The building, which has served as a school and a cabinet maker's shop, was targeted for sale as surplus property.
Dick Or, who has leased the space for 12 years, spoke against the sale and presented a vision for a Makers Barn
where craftsmen could teach local students and seniors. This is a form of cultural heritage that once lost is truly lost,
resident Jennifer Bertner added. While Town Counsel Susan Murphy clarified that the town must follow a legal procurement process rather than selecting a specific user, voters were moved by the building's historic value. The final standing vote of 226-210 failed to reach the two-thirds threshold required for the sale.
Motion: To authorize the sale of 8 Short Street.
