Hingham Town Meeting approved a total operating budget of $173,059,838 for Fiscal Year 2027 under Article 6, following a lengthy session of line-item reviews and debate over school and municipal staffing costs. Advisory Committee Chair Carol Tully presented the financial overview, noting that while the budget is balanced, property taxes are projected to increase 3.4% in each of the next five years. This projection aligns with the town's ongoing Sustainable Budget framework, which aims to cap spending growth while managing an influx of enrollment and aging infrastructure.

The budget discussion saw several items held for separate debate, most notably the $61.5 million school payroll. Resident Kevin Shunati voiced concerns regarding digital safety and cyberbullying, asking how the district would protect students from fake images before approving the funds. Superintendent of Schools Katie Roberts responded that the district is addressing these challenges through curriculum focused on digital citizenship. A motion by Simil Shaw to increase the school payroll to $62.6 million to provide a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for teachers was ultimately defeated by the meeting.

Other held items included DPW and Library payrolls. Linda Harper Stone advocated for the library’s 2.4% increase, stating, The library is not the building. It is the people in it... We need every person. While most original budget figures remained intact, the Conservation Payroll line item was increased by $1 following a resident's motion. The final omnibus budget passed as amended by that single dollar, reflecting the town's attempt to balance parent demands for school services against the 3.5% spending cap policy.

Motion: To appropriate $173,059,838 for the FY2027 Operating Budget.
